The dismissal of former Arsenal midfielder and Cameroon international Alex Song may have been a turning point in last night's 4-0 loss to Croatia, but the European side always looked like threatening the Indomitable Lions.
In truth, the winning margin could have been even greater due to the freedom Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric was afforded in central areas, the workmanlike performance of Ivan Perisic who was a constant creative outlet and the dynamic and attack-minded approach from Ivica Olic.
However, there was only one man who Arsenal supporters had an interested eye on - Bayern Munich attacker Mario Mandzukic, whose position is so untenable at the Allianz Arena that a transfer away from the Bundesliga giants is a foregone conclusion.
Against Cameroon, Mandzukic put in a four star performance as he struck twice in the 4-0 rout. His first was a powerful header while his second was a close-range effort.
The manner in which he took his goals excited Gunners on social media, with some fans exclaiming that he is a natural "goal poacher" and that the club "need to snap him up".
Not all fans were convinced, though…
Mandzukic looks good in red & white, doesn't he? #AFC— Robert Buckles (@MusefulBuckles) June 18, 2014
But, well, you can't please everybody…
