On this day: United move could affect Mata, Torres on 'pressure' under Mourinho

On the 18th June 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 18th June 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 18th June 2013…

No Thiago? No Mata

Manchester United were being linked with a move for Thiago Alcantara a year ago today. The Barcelona midfielder had set his heart on a move away from the club and he had a release clause that had recently come into affect.

It was also suggested that the departure of Thiago would allow Barcelona to sign Juan Mata from Chelsea - whom Jose Mourinho was said to be not keen on.

However, despite United's long pursuit of Thiago he ended up joining former boss Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich. But in the long run it might have worked out alright for United. Barca didn't get Mata - but Manchester United did.

Torres on his future

Fernando Torres was bullish about his future at Chelsea after a good end to the season at the Stamford Bridge under Rafa Benitez.

And he hoped to get even better under Jose Mourinho - despite admitting even more pressure was likely under the Portuguese:

"I am the first to admit that a lot more was expected of me, even I expected more of myself. Now I have the added pressure of Mourinho and that's a challenge for any player. Chelsea is the club I'm at and where I want to be, I want to keep winning trophies there."

Sanogo 'impressed'

Yaya Sanogo was talking about his future move to Arsenal. The Frenchman was Gunners-bound after signing a pre-contract deal from AJ Auxerre.

He also spoke about his injury ravaged past - suggesting he almost quit the game a few years ago:

"I wanted to stop. I told myself it was useless to go on and to imperil my health. I could not run any longer. I had too much pain, the doctors didn't know what to do... Gilles Grimandi [Arsenal scout] came to see me from time to time at Auxerre too. One day he called me for a meeting in a Paris hotel and Arsene Wenger was there. I was very impressed. Wenger told me I would get opportunities and reassured me about my injury. He told me he had followed me for years. That meeting was very important and today I am an Arsenal player."
