Netherlands player ratings v Australia: Manchester United man superb again

Van Persie United 2

Netherlands have one foot in the last 16 after a 3-2 win over Australia, thanks to leading role form captain Robin Van Persie.

In a match that had everything, the Netherlands ran out 3-2 winners in Porto Alegre so make it 2 wins from two so far in this World Cup.

Arjen Robben raced clear to give the Dutch the lead after 21 minutes, before Australia's Tim Cahill equalised just 70 seconds later through a superb volley.

The second half carried on where the first left off and this time it was the Kangaroos who took the lead, through a controversial penalty given against a Daryl Janmaat handball, that was converted by Mile Jedinak.

Netherlands were quick to respond and a Robin Van Persie equaliser was followed by a winner from substitute Memphis Depay. A winner that ensure Netherlands make it two wins from two so far this tournament.

Here are our player ratings for the Netherlands:

Jasper Cillessen 6 -

The Goalkeeper wasn't at fault from either the Cahill screamer nor the penalty, however won't be pleased with conceding two. Wasn't tested much other than the goals.

Bruno Martins Indi 6 -

Went off after 45 minutes because of a terrible tackle from Australia's talisman Tim Cahill. The defender got stretchered off and may fear his World Cup could be over, played well before that however.

Ron Vlaar 6 -

The Aston Villa man struggled with the attacking intent the Australians had in the first half, as the match wore on he began to handle it better.

Stefan De Vrij 6 -

Similar to Vlaar, was surprised and rattled in the first half as Australia looked to be on the front foot. Will need to defend better if Netherlands are serious about winning the trophy.

Daryl Janmaat 6 -

Unfortunate to give the penalty away as the ball was kicked at his hands from close range. Other than that played well, kept Tim Cahill quiet overall.

Nigel De Jong 7 -

Showed everyone why he has played for some of the top clubs in Europe. Strong in the tackle and wasn't afraid to put his aggression to good use for his team.

Daley Blind 6 -

The Ajax midfielder has recently been linked with Liverpool and although didn't complete two wonderful passes like he did against Spain, was still energetic on the left wing for the Dutch.

Jonathan de Guzman 7 -

The Swansea man was a surprised starter in the midfield, however was creative and energetic in the midfield, helping create a true end to end match.

Wesley Sneijder 7 -

Galatasary midfield didn't create a lot in the midfield, didn't have a lot of chances to make an impact but everything he did do was positive.

Robin van Persie 8 -

The Captain looks the real deal in this World Cup. Manchester United fans will be hoping Van Gaal can get the best out of him at Old Trafford, great finish for his goal and created chances for his team mates.

Arjen Robben 7 -

You know exactly what you're going to get from the Bayern Munich winger, lightning pace and a brilliant left foot. Took his individual goal brilliantly as everyone expected him to pass, able to unlock any defence, needs to stay at his best.

Subs:

Memphis Depay 7 -

Scored the winner, with a bit of help from Ryan the Australian goalkeeper. Despite the mistake from the goalkeeper, Depay scored the winner that realistically sends his country through to the last 16.

Georginio Wijnaldum 6 -

Come on for De Guzman after 78 minutes with the aim of stopping Australia's attacks and threat for an equaliser, did just that.

Jeremain Lens N/A -

Lens replaced Van Persie after 87 minutes and therefore barely touched the ball!
