Manchester United were linked with signing Daniele de Rossi last summer, and he admitted earlier this year the thought of leaving crossed his mind.
Had it not been for new boss Rudi Garcia winning him round, the Red Devils may have had a real top class midfielder on their hands.
There's one reason why a United move may have appealed more than any others had he decided upon leaving Roma, and that is treble-winning captain Roy Keane.
De Rossi told reporters at a press conference: "He has always been my idol and if I chose to wear the number 16 shirt it’s also because of him.
"There are a lot of players I like, from Guardiola to Lampard, Xavi, Gerrard and many others.
“But Roy Keane is like no other player."
Had United acted quicker last summer, after De Rossi had endured a difficult 2012/13, they may have had more luck.
If Louis van Gaal remains ambitious he can try to tempt him again, but De Rossi remarked last Autumn that he was glad he did not make the switch, so happy was he with Roma's beginning to last season.
