With Cesc Fabregas joining Chelsea for £27 million, plenty of Manchester United fans will question just why the club shelled out £27.5 million to sign Marouane Felliani from Everton.
The United star struggled hugely in his first season at Old Trafford, widely regarded as one of the flops of the season, with plenty considering him lucky to be included in Belgium’s World Cup squad.
The reasons he struggled so much under David Moyes have been widely debated but he looked a little out of his depth playing for a side that was trying to defend a Premier League title.
However, he paid back the faith which was shown in him by Marc Wilmots, coming off the bench to score the important equaliser against Algeria yesterday.
He gave a glimpse into the sort of impact that he’s capable of providing and Louis van Gaal will have an eye on impact players at the tournament while he goes about his business with the Netherlands national team.
He’s given Wilmots a big headache ahead of the rest of the tournament because Fellaini is at his best when his confidence is sky high.
He has the ability to be a real enforcer in midfield, snapping at the heels of the opposition and providing a big physical threat in attack as he displayed against the Algerians.
Fellaini will give himself the best possible chance of featuring for United next season if he continues to put in match changing and winning displays for Belgium, which gives LvG no choice other than to pay attention to him.
At a time when United are being linked with a variety of midfielders in the transfer market, Fellaini has got his head down and is working hard to have an important impact for Belgium.
Here’s what United fans on Twitter made of his brief cameo for the Belgians yesterday.
Moyes said whenever he watched Belgium, Fellaini was often their best player. That's because they play him in his best position, Dave #MUFC— David McDonnell (@DiscoMirror) June 17, 2014

Ochoa's performance tonight can't impress me more than Fellaini's goal. I've never seen him playing with his head like that before.— marin (@stringsoflife) June 17, 2014
Fellaini's performance in that game just shows that he was played out of position the whole season for united. That guy is no CDM.— Amal Morjaria (@AmalMorjaria) June 17, 2014
Some people are saying Fellaini has surprised us with his performance To be honest, He even surprised himself #MUFC— * Les Tricolores * (@KofiAkwaboah_MU) June 17, 2014
Fellaini's performance should please Van Gaal. That shouldn't stop him from getting a midfielder though. Fellaini is unpredictable— Brazil_2014 ™ (@AngeloBenjy) June 17, 2014
That is the performance you'll get when you play Fellaini in the right position and teammates who knows how to cross— Keith Kue (@Keeefyboy) June 17, 2014
