Les Reed, Executive Director of Southampton Football Club, has quashed talk that the Saints could be lining-up against Adam Lallana on the opening day of the 2014/15 Premier League season, when Southampton travel to Anfield to face Liverpool.
Speaking to Sky Sports News to give his reaction to today's fixture reveal, Reed addressed a number of issues, including fixtures, Rickie Lambert, Ronald Koeman and transfers.
When asked about facing Rickie Lambert, who completed a £4m switch to Anfield earlier this summer, Reed said that he expects a good reception for the Southampton hero.
"I think they (the Saints fans) will give Rickie a fantastic reaction. Rickie has done fantastic things for this club. The fans adore him and were disappointed to see him go. But I think they've understood the special nature of that transfer and they'll never forget what Rickie's done here," Reed said.
Reed continued to praise Lambert's professionalism and the respect he showed Southampton prior to and after the completion of his transfer to Liverpool. Lambert wrote Southampton fans a letter upon his departure.
"He's a real gentleman, the move has gone smoothly and he's been very respectful. And I think our fans respect him. I think they'll give him an ovation and I don't see a problem with that."
Reed was expectedly coy when talking about the future of Southampton captain Adam Lallana, who has been linked with a move that would see him follow Lambert to Anfield, with several media reports claiming Lallana wishes to leave the Saints.
"There's nothing happening at the moment, he's out at the World Cup. There's a lot of media speculation," Reed clarified.
"As I've said repeatedly, we will deal with player transfers if they're right for the club. I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to be worrying about Adam lining up against us."
Southampton face Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday the 16th of August on the opening day of the 2014/15 season.
