Amazon unveils the Fire Phone

Amazon smartphone

Amazon have unveiled their first ever smartphone at a press event in Seattle.

After months of rumours and leaks Amazon has finally announced its entry into the smart phone market with the Amazon Fire Phone.

It will have a 4.7" HD screen that will be made of Corning's super-strong Gorilla Glass 3. The phone frame has a rubberised texture similar to that of Amazon's Kindle Fire line of tablet computers, and has aluminium buttons for a tactile feel.

The Fire Phone will be powered by a super-fast 2.2GHz Adreno 330 GPU quad-core processor, it will also be capable of running multiple applications without slowing down thanks to the 2GB of onboard RAM.

Taking quick pictures on the Fire Phone should be a dream with the 13-megapixel rear-facing camera that is equipped with a f/2.0 lens and optical image stabilisation. Also you don't have to worry about filling the Fire Phone's memory up with photos as Amazon are giving you free unlimited storage for photos in Amazon Cloud Drive.

Amazon has also incorporated Dolby sound technology into their smart phone with dual stereo speakers. In addition every Fire Phone will come equipped with magnetic tangle-free earphones.

The Mayday helpline feature that is prominent on the Kindle Fire tablets will also be available on the Fire Phone.

As will a brand new feature called FireFly, which detects phone numbers, movies, books, CDs, games, and food items simply by scanning them with the handset's camera. Once you've scanned the item, you will have the option to purchase it on the Amazon store or if its music you will gain access to it through Prime Music. Developers will have access to FireFly and will be able to build it into their own apps for the Amazon smart phone.

Arguably the most anticipated and exciting feature of the new Fire Phone is its 3D interface. The 3D technology used is unique to the Fire Phone, and it has Dynamic Perspective which means the 3D interface will follow you around. This is thanks to the 120-degree field of view of all four cameras front-facing cameras.

Unfortunately for the UK the Amazon Fire Phone will be released exclusively to the US to begin with, and is available to pre order for them right now.
