According to Spanish newspaper AS, Manchester United have once again turned to Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera.
The Red Devils were hot on his heels last summer, as former boss David Moyes spent the off-season attempting to sign the former Spanish U21 star in a bid to solve United’s midfield problem.
After months of trying without success, including a failed £24million bid, Man United opted for Belgian international Marouane Fellaini, arguably David Moyes’ biggest error during his short stay at the club.
New manager Louis Van Gaal faces the same midfield problem this summer, and if reports are to be true, Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera has once again become a target.
If Manchester United are serious, however, then they only have a 13-day deadline to sign the star at a moderate price of €36million before his release clause increases to €40million from June 30 onwards.
Described as versatile with excellent technical ability, the Athletic Bilbao star showed last season exactly why David Moyes was so keen to bring him to Old Trafford with a string of fine performances which helped the club qualify for next season’s Champions League.
In 31 La Liga starts for the club, he notched five goals and added a further five assists, yet his shining attributes were breaking up and dictating play from the middle of the park. He totalled 103 tackles throughout the campaign, made 54 key passes and averaged an 80.6% pass success rate.
Rated cheaper than fellow midfielder William Carvalho and only €1.5million more than last season’s big summer signing Fellaini, Ander Herrera represents a fine option for that elusive midfield slot.
