OKC Thunder's Russell Westbrook is already preparing for a life after basketball.
Westbrook has a way of playing on the basketball court that turns heads, with an ultra-aggressive style coupled with athletic explosiveness that makes him a huge asset to any team, but also rubs some people the wrong way, because he does not play like a conventional point guard should.
Russell Westbrook wears clothes in a way that mirrors his unique basketball style. His outlandish outfits have been scrutinised and even ridiculed. Clearly he does not care and Westbrook, still just 25 years old, is teaming up with luxury department store Barneys New York to release an exclusive collection, titled Westbrook XO Barneys New York.
According to wwd.com the collection will launch in July, ready to be shifted in the Autumn season, but will be unveiled this month.
When he eventually retires he has an obvious second career in fashion ready for him:
“I definitely would want to see a Westbrook brand in clothing,” he said. And the Barneys collaboration is a “big step in that direction.”
Russell Westbrook is very much part of a younger, ‘new school’ generation of NBA players that have forged a name for themselves in the fashion world. Amare Stoudemire is often spotted at fashion weeks. Dwyane Wade already has his own collection and has collaborated with numerous designers over the years.
What Westbrook is doing is becoming the norm. As long as Westbrook attacks his fashion endeavours off the court with the same fervour with which he attacks the rim on the court he will continue making splashes in the fashion scene.
