Newcastle defender back on Guardiola's radar after World Cup show

Bayern Badge

Mathieu Debuchy impressed for Les Bleus in their 3-0 win against Honduras with a performance that could see Bayern Munich rekindle their interest.

Newcastle United’s busy summer of spending could yet be funded by the departure of highly-rated right-back Mathieu Debuchy, following his star turn for France at the World Cup.

Picked by Didier Deschamps ahead of the Manchester City-bound Bacary Sagna, the 28-year-old excelled with his showing second only to that of two-goal hero Karim Benzema.

The Newcastle United man certainly won praise for his performance on, where he received the second best overall rating for the match, with 7.9 out of 10.

A crucial factor in his impressive display was some excellent defensive work, with Debuchy completing the most successful tackles of anyone on the pitch, with four.

The Frenchman also enjoyed an 86% passing accuracy against Honduras, while winning 67% of his aerial duels throughout the contest.

All told, Debuchy had 81 touches of the ball, won three dribbles and even managed four shots in an all action display that has got many talking already.

One club who are already reportedly keen on the defender is Bayern Munich and on this evidence a move to the Allianz Arena may not be out of the question.

Back in February Die Roten were thought to be tracking Debuchy with a view to launching a bid.

And with Philip Lahm moved into the midfield, manager Pep Guardiola may just opt to bring the Frenchman in with Newcastle likely to be open to the sale – provided the price is right.

It could even allow the Magpies to launch an audacious bid for Lyon pair Alexandre Lacazette and Clement Grenier – both of whom have previously been rumoured to be on Newcastle’s radar.

Should Debuchy continue to take on a prominent role for France then it could be an even busier summer on Tyneside.
