Should Manchester City be pleased about Higuain’s Barcelona interest?

Gonzalo Higuain says that he is flattered to be linked with Barcelona, and Manchester City can now heave a sigh of relief.

Following Argentina’s 2-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina at the World Cup on Sunday, Gonzalo Higuain made it clear that he would not turn down the chance to play alongside Lionel Messi at Barcelona.

The 26-year-old striker joined Napoli from Real Madrid only last summer, but he has been linked with a move back to Spain with Barca reported to be keen on him.

Madrid-based sports daily Marca has reported that a deal has been struck between Barcelona and Higuain, and that the Catalan giants are now trying to agree on a transfer fee with Napoli.

New Barca coach Luis Enrique is said to have earmarked the Argentine as his number one transfer target this summer, and the way he played with Messi on Sunday indicated how fruitful the duo can be at Camp Nou next season.

Higuain came on at the start of the second half against Bosnia at Estadio do Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, and was crucial in making the team look more composed and better in attack.

The former Madrid star’s link-up play with the 26-year-old was marvellous and coach Alejandro Sabella could start him in the next match.

‘Of course. I enjoy playing alongside him for the national team’, he told Spanish news agency Efe when asked if he would enjoy playing alongside Messi at Barcelona.

‘Obviously it would be an enormous pleasure, but for now I’m focused on the World Cup. I’m flattered by the interest from Barca. Any player would be’.

The key point is Higuain showing his interest in playing for Barcelona because of the presence of his compatriot and friend Messi. And this would have been a cause for worry for Manchester City just last month, but not now.

In a recent interview with FourFourTwo magazine, Aguero explained his long-term friendship with Messi. The two played together for Argentina during their successful 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship campaign, are also FIFA partners on the games console and have a great relationship with each other.

Not so long ago Aguero’s father said that his son “would love to go to Barcelona”, but was quick to point out that City will “make it impossible”. When Aguero moved to the Premier League, it was reported that Madrid could launch a bid for him eventually. And earlier this summer, Barcelona were said to be interested.

City have no reason to sell Aguero and the 26-year-old former Independiente star himself has said time and time again that he is happy playing for the Manchester outfit. And now it seems that Barcelona have moved on from their initial interest in the Citizens star and have set their sights elsewhere.

Whether Higuain eventually moves to Barcelona or not remains to be seen, but City fans can feel relieved that one of their star assets is not going anywhere this summer.
