Barcelona endured a below par season under Gerardo Martino, and the Argentine paid for it with his job, as former player Luis Enrique was appointed in his place. The former Celta Vigo and Roma boss has now been charged with the task of rebuilding the Catalan giants - which has already seen midfielder Cesc Fabregas sold to Chelsea.
That left the club needing another central midfielder, and they have moved quickly to bring one in. Barcelona have long tried to sign players that have impressed in La Liga, such as Dani Alves, Jordi Alba, Seydou Keita and David Villa, and they've taken the same path by landing Croatian playmaker Rakitic.
The 26-year-old took a while to settle in to life in Spain having made his name with FC Basel and Schalke in Switzerland and Germany respectively, but he has enjoyed his best season to date in Andalusia, hitting 13 goals and racking up 12 assists as well.
Those displays for Unai Emery's men have made him one of the hottest properties in Europe, with Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester United both linked with big money swoops for the midfielder throughout the season.
However, if Brendan Rodgers or Louis van Gaal were hoping to bring Rakitic to England, then they have missed their chance after Barcelona took to Instagram to confirm his arrival at the Camp Nou.
Currently away on international duty, Rakitic is one of Croatia's key players as Niko Kovac's men look to bounce back from a 3-1 defeat to Brazil and get out of Group A. Barcelona may be hoping for an early exit in order to get him integrated with the squad in Catalunya - especially if Spain can't recover from their Dutch nightmare.
