Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United reunion set to break records for highest US soccer game

Ronaldo Strikes

Real Madrid take on Manchester United this summer in a friendly, and it has the potential to be a record breaking affair.

US fans who hope to be captured by their country's World Cup exploits, will have the chance to get further connected with the game as Europe's top clubs head to the country on pre-season this summer.

Manchester United are regular visitors to the USA, and will face another team who realise the growing market in the country, Real Madrid.

The glamour clash is part of the International Champions Cup, a tournament in which Roma, Manchester City, Liverpool, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Olympiakos are also competing in.

It is United's match with Real which is currently attracting the most interest - with Cristiano Ronaldo set to face his former team for only the third time since his £80 million switch in 2012.

The two teams face off on August 2, although Ronaldo's participation is not of course certain due to a World Cup recovery period and his fitness.

That is not a risk deterring fans at all, with Spanish newspaper AS reporting that tickets selling out, setting a US soccer record in the process.

The match is being held at the famous Michigan Stadium, which has a capacity for 109,091 spectators.

The match between United and Madrid has the potential to break a record for the highest ever attended soccer game in the US, with the 1994 World Cup Final at the Rose Bowl hauling in 94,000.

Charlie Stilliano, representative of the tournament organisers, said: "The fans have recognised the magnitude of the game, with the most famous teams in the world, but the response exceeded our expectations."

Now all the game has to do is to live up to the star billing, while United will hope to showcase several summer signings.
