Arsenal star admits he is disappointed at World Cup snub

Olivier Giroud has admitted to being disappointed at being dropped for France's opening game of the World Cup against Honduras.

France did not miss Olivier Giroud against Honduras, but the striker was certainly upset to miss out on a starting spot.

After scoring in each of Les Bleus' pre-tournament friendlies, the Arsenal forward was left out to accommodate Antoine Griezmann, and came off the bench only in the finals stages.

He admitted feeling crestfallen after the game, telling L'Equipe:

"Yes, it was a disappointment, I will not say otherwise.

"But my little case does not come before the group. I am disappointed, but I respect the choices of the coach."

France racked up a 3-0 victory, and Giroud had to watch on as striker Karim Benzema plundered two goals himself.

After demonstrating he can play effectively with Benzema in the warm-up games, it will not have been easy for the forward to learn of his benching.

Given Honduras' aggressive approach however, it may be a net positive to Arsenal fans that he was not on the field for longer than 12 minutes and did not pick up any injuries.

Giroud added that he is upbeat about France's result: "I'm really happy. I hope it is a beautiful story that begins."
