Arsenal and Manchester United appear to be contemplating swapping unwanted players.
This is not the first time the paper has reported such, with it claimed in April the English midfielder was on the Gunners' radar.
The Mirror claim this time that Arsene Wenger would demand Cleverley as part of a potential deal in selling Vermaelen.
Like the Belgian, a couple of seasons ago Cleverley was a player whose stock was high, but particularly this season his reputation has taken a battering.
Handed a prominent role under David Moyes, the midfielder failed to shine and landed up being made a scapegoat for the Red Devils' underwhelming season.
It culminated in him being dropped, and subsequently missing out on the England squad, and becoming a figure of derision among supporters across the country.
He is a player with potential however, and parallels could easily be drawn with the stick Aaron Ramsey faced at Arsenal, and Arsene Wenger may see a talented midfielder he believes he can turn around, unlike Vermaelen who it appears he clearly no longer rates.
Any transfer however, would be hard to stomach for Arsenal fans, having passed up on the chance to sign world class midfielder Cesc Fabregas.
Despite talk Fabregas would not fit into the Arsenal side, seeing him move to Chelsea has been an already bitter pill to swallow, and signing a player considered as not good enough for Manchester United by many, could land up being a PR-disaster for Arsene Wenger.
Quite where Tom Cleverley would find a place in the Arsenal team, is a question we simply cannot answer.
