Argentina player ratings v Bosnia and Herzegovina: City striker shines

Lionel Messi Argentina

Player ratings for Argentina against Bosnia and Herzegovina as Lionel Messi scored at the Maracana.

Argentina got off to a winning start at the Maracana on Sunday night.

Bosnia & Herzegovina defender Sead Kolasinac scored the World Cup's quickest own goal inside three minutes to give Argentina a 1-0 lead.

Despite the first half that had few chances for either side, Bosnia would have been the happier teams with their performance, despite being a goal down.

After half-time and a change of formation for Argentina, Lionel Messi scored a great individual goal to ensure they got off to a winning start.

A late consolation goal from Vedad Ibisevic wasn't enough to stop the party for the thousands of Argentinians inside the Maracana.

Here are our player ratings for Argentina:

Sergio Romero - 6

The keeper didn't have much to do, but he was beaten in the latter stages with Bosnia's only clear chance in front of goal.

Ezequiel Garay - 7

Played a consistent role in Argentina's defence, no matter if it was four at the back or five. Ensured Edin Dzeko had few chances.

Hugo Campagnaro - 6

Went off at half time as Argentina looked to go to a more attacking formation, but made no mistakes while on the pitch.

Pablo Zabaleta - 7

The Manchester City full-back was a constant threat down Bosnia's left and was constantly getting forward until Argentina conceded. Energetic and consistent as always.

Marcos Rojo - 7

Similar role to Zabaleta except on Argentina's left, getting forward consistently whenever he could. Also demonstrated flamboyant skills in the second half to please the Maracana fans.

Federico Fernandez - 6

Was consistent and secure in Argentina's defence, keeping Dzeko to limited touches and chances in front of goal. However, he is likely to be tested as Argentina progress into the latter stages.

Javier Mascherano - 7

Consistent and dogged in the defensive midfield as always. Ensures the creative players in front of him don't have to worry about defending, and Argentina would be a weaker team without him. Solid performance.

Maxi Rodriguez - 6

The former Liverpool midfielder failed to create many chances or get himself into the box, substituted at half time to compensate for a change of formation. Will have to do better next time.

Angel di Maria - 6

Has been outstanding for Real Madrid this season, but his performance on Sunday failed to come close to the standards he set for himself. Kept losing the ball in midfield, and although through no fault of effort. Wasn't able to create many chances.

Lionel Messi - 7

Scored a superb individual goal in the second half to ensure Argentina won and announce to the world he means business in Brazil this summer. However, the rest of his performance wasn't to his normal high standards and he will need to improve that if Argentina are going to go all the way. Still a superb goal, though.

Sergio Aguero - 7

The City man linked up with Messi well and looks like a frightening partnership for defences in the future. Outshone his City teammate as he got involved in build-up play for his side much better, will want to get on the scoresheet to cap that off next time.

Gonzalo Higuain - 7

Come on at half time and helped Messi, Aguero and Di Maria find space in the Bosnia defence. Done his chances no harm to start in the future, especially within the formation that worked well in the second half.

Fernando Gago - 6

The former Real Madrid midfielder looked solid in midfield in the second half after coming on at half-time. Will be difficult to force his way into the starting xi, but played well tonight.

Lucas Biglia - N/A The midfielder come on for Aguero with just three minutes remaining.
