According to a report in The Mirror, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is plotting a £25million move for Benfica star Lanzar Markovic after the player is said to be keen on a move.
The 20-year-old flying winger has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea in the past, with some Serbian reports once mentioning that the Blues were set to buy him and then loan him to Portuguese champions Benfica.
Those reports, however, proved to be false and the Serbian international penned a five-year deal with the Lisbon-based outfit last summer.
Chelsea’s reported interest in the star remained, and due to their good relationship with Benfica as a result of past transfer dealings, the Stamford Bridge outfit appeared in pole position to land the Serb this summer.
The former Partizan Belgrade youth product, though, appears to have his heart set elsewhere and if reports are to be believed, Liverpool could do a deal.
The Reds are in the midst of a busy summer in the transfer market, as boss Brendan Rodgers wants to take his impressive team to the next level by adding quality in depth.
The Northern Irishman has already concluded deals for Rickie Lambert and Emre Can, but he isn’t prepared to stop there as a number of other players are being linked with moves to the Merseysiders.
A new winger in particular appears high on the agenda, and with Argentine wizard Juan Itrurbe set to stay in Serie A, Benfica’s Lanzar Markovic has surged to the top of Liverpool’s wish list.
He has played his part in an excellent treble-winning campaign for Benfica, scoring seven goals in 49 appearances in all competitions.
