It was a brave, if not gutsy performance, but for all of England's chances they failed to get the result they craved against Italy last night.
Goals from Claudio Marchisio and Mario Balotelli either side of the Daniel Sturridge strike that gave England hope did for the Three Lions - who now face two must win games against Uruguay and Costa Rica in order to progress from the group stage.
But as depressing as the night was for all England fans, it was worse for national team physio Gary Lewin. The former Arsenal doc jumped up celebrating Sturridge's goal, landed on a water bottle, and dislocated his ankle.
The gravity of the situation however did not appear immediately recognisable. Rio Ferdinand obviously did not think it was that serious at first...
What happened to running it off??? The magic spray & sponge??? Our Physio Gary Lewin has to man up!!— Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) June 15, 2014
But the former Manchester United player, currently looking for a new club after announcing he would leave Old Trafford when his contract expires this summer, soon apologised on Twitter when realising that Lewin was genuinely hurt.
Was only having a bit of banter but just found out that Gary Lewins injury was serious so apologies for previous tweets on the injury. My bad— Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) June 15, 2014
