Reports persists suggesting that Manchester United will sign a player from Bayern Munich this summer.
The German giants are home to some of the best players in the modern game and potential candidates to revitalise the Manchester United midfield.
The Daily Mail claims that while United have considered Toni Kroos, Louis van Gaal would prefer to go after the experienced Bastian Schweinsteiger.
“It is understood incoming United manager Louis van Gaal prefers Schweinsteiger to German team mate Toni Kroos,” writes Rob Shepherd.
They’re two similar players who play central roles, slightly deeper than a number ten style player; Kroos, young and more long term while Schweinsteiger is the classic experienced option to have coming into the middle.
Schweinsteiger’s links to United are nothing new but if LvG prefers him to any other midfield candidate from the German champions, United could go after a high profile deal following the World Cup.
United’s midfield lacked a real presence last season and despite the £27.5 million signing of Marouane Fellaini, the Belgian was unable to inject an element of physical intimidation into the middle of United’s team.
LvG should find that all of the creative boxes are ticked when he takes over at Old Trafford, with Juan Mata a top quality number ten and he could choose to bring Shinji Kagawa in off of the left wing.
Wayne Rooney is also perfectly capable of dropping off from the top of the attack to take up a midfield position just behind Robin Van Persie so LvG has all angles covered in that respect.
What he needs is a fresh authoritative player, fit enough to run the middle of the team throughout a game and someone who can exert that leadership and demand the best from his teammates.
Schweinsteiger ticks those boxes which explains why van Gaal may prefer him to the more technically gifted Kroos, a player arguably easier in the eye when he plays in Pep Guardiola’s team.
It’s important van Gaal makes the right decision but we won’t get a clearer idea of what he’s planning and who he’s going to base his midfield around until his involvement with the Netherlands has ended.
