David Luiz is a flamboyant character, both on the pitch and off it. The Brazil international is friendly, has a good sense of humour and gets along well with his teammates.
But even then one would fail to pinpoint the exact reason why the 27-year-old makes this strange and rather silly face on this video?
Perhaps Luiz is very excited at joining Paris Saint-Germain and wants to announce himself to the French club’s fans in style. His move from Chelsea to PSG was confirmed on Friday for a (reported) £50 million transfer fee – a world record for a defender.
The amount that Ligue 1 champions PSG have paid Chelsea for Luiz has been ridiculed for many. The former Benfica star is now the world’s most expensive defender, but by no means is he the world’s best – his Brazil and now PSG teammate Thiago Silva is.
Moreover, there have been question marks on Luiz’s footballing qualities. True, he has played crucial roles in Chelsea’s Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League triumphs during his three-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge, but he has often made some terrible mistakes.
Luiz may be versatile enough to play both as a central defender and as a defensive midfielder, but one would question why both Rafael Benitez and Jose Mourinho wanted him to switch his playing positions: could he not compete for a place at the back or was there was a lack of defensive midfielder in the team?
Chelsea might believe that they have done a great business by selling Luiz for £50m, but would they regret letting him go if he was to go on and win the World Cup with Brazil this summer?
