According to the English paper The Metro, Arsenal have submitted a £7million bid for highly-rated Sao Paulo defender Rodrigo Caio.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is keen to beef up his squad this summer, as the Frenchman looks to add quality and depth in order to close the gap on Premier League winners Manchester City.
Following Bacary Sagna’s recent exit, the defence has become a cause for concern as the Gunners lack numbers to cover key areas.
At the heart of the defence, beyond the impressive Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker there isn’t much to choose from and given the latter’s age, a young central defender is a priority this summer.
Rodrigo Caio ultimately fits the bill as the 20-year-old plays mainly as a central defender, though he does have the ability to step forward into a defensive midfield slot – similar to former Brazilian star Gilberto Silva who had a successful six-year spell at the Gunners.
It has been said that Arsenal watched the Sao Paulo defender during the recent Toulon Tournament in France, and the young Brazilian star impressed with his technical ability and calmness at the back.
Standing at 5 ft 11, Caio has also played in a right-back position and was once lauded by the media for an excellent performance against Barcelona star Neymar whilst the Brazilian striker was playing for Santos.
The paper go on to say that the player was recently signed by the famed football agent Jorge Mendes, and after an alleged meeting with Arsenal chief scout Steve Rowley went well, Arsene Wenger and his men are confident of getting a deal done.
