Manchester United fans react on Twitter to 5-1 Van Gaal masterclass

Louis van Gaal led The Netherlands to a 5-1 win over world champions Spain last night.

Open your eyes, pick your jaws up from the floor and breathe. Yes, it did really happen. Yes, The Netherlands did tear apart the world champions Spain - with a scoreline of 5-1 barely a fair assessment of their overwhelming superiority.

Holland were absolutely incredible last night - and it all came from the tactician that is Louis van Gaal.

Oranje lined up in a 5-3-2 formation - with Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie up front. It is a step away from the traditional tactics of Dutch football in the past but it worked.

They allowed Spain to tiki-taka until they became a threat, which is when the choke was applied by the likes of Nigel de Jong, Jonathan de Guzman and Ron Vlaar - who was sensational at the heart of defence.

Only Andres Iniesta looked a genuine threat for Spain, as the Dutch continued to make life miserable for Los Rojos in the centre of the park.

But when Holland attacked they did so with purpose. The ageing trio of RvP, Robben and Wesley Sneijder rolled back the years with exceptional quick passing and ruthless finishing. When the score hit five, Vicente del Bosque consoled his players and began planning for the next game.

For one set of Premier League fans it was a game they will never forget. Manchester United sacked David Moyes toward the end of last season, and have replaced him with van Gaal.

He certainly looks a good appointment now.

He outthought, outgunned and outplayed Del Bosque in the guessing game - tactically he was superb. But on top of that his relationship with goal-getter Van Persie looks impenetrable. The big high-five after Van Persie scored a sensational header to open the scoring was testament to that theory.

United fans are therefore very excited, and who can blame them - with Van Gaal at the helm perhaps anything is possible.
