West Bromwich Albion fans have reacted to the surprise appointment of Alan Irvine.
The appointment took us all by surprise when West Brom announced yesterday that it would be Everton's Head of Academy Alan Irvine that will be taking over from Pepe Mel rather than Tim Sherwood.
Sherwood would have been a popular appointment after an impressive spell at Tottenham Hotspur. Alan Irvine on the other hand hasn't managed a club since he was sacked by Sheffield Wednesday in February 2011. Since then he has spent his time with Everton working with the club's academy and helping the development of players such as Ross Barkley.
Unsurprisingly many Baggies fans had not heard of Alan Irvine and were therefore shocked at the appointment of a relative inexperienced manager. The Scot is highly regarded by many for his work with academies and as West Brom wanted to bring in a coach rather than a manager perhaps it isn't a surprise after all.
Here are some of the responses to the appointment on Twitter:
To go from the prospect of Tim Sherwood to Alan Irvine depresses me greatly #WBA— Ashley Hill (@AshHillWBA) June 14, 2014
Honestly the appointment of Alan Irvine at #wba is like an episode of 24 where everything that can go wrong does!— russ bennett (@rustyrb) June 14, 2014
Good luck to Alan Irvine @ #wba - WBA fans get used to him talking about how good every single opponent is & never 'talking up' his own— Reggie (@SD_Owl) June 14, 2014
Waited weeks for that appointment, And Alan Irvine is who we have to put up with?! Absolute joke #JpOut— Callum (@callumwestbrom5) June 14, 2014
Only time will tell how good of an appointment Alan Irvine will be but it seems many have already decided it won't be a successful spell at The Hawthorns.
