Top 5 smartphones of 2014 so far

HTC One M8

If you're in the market for a new mobile phone then look no further than our guide of the top 5 smartphones of 2014 so far.

We are two-weeks away from reaching the halfway mark in 2014, and whilst there will definitely be more fantastic handsets released in the second part of 2014; we are going to look at the best of the best so far.

5) Sony Xperia Z2

Fifth in our list is the very powerful Xperia Z2. No application or programme should ever be too intensive for this smartphone, as its 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor and 3GB of RAM should plough through anything you throw at it.

The Z2's battery life is also brillaint, Sony claim it will give you 740 hours of standby time and approximately 20 hours of talk time. It also has a huge 5.2" 1080p displays that has a pixel density of 424ppi, on top of that you'll be able to point and shoot with the 20.7MP rear camera.

It runs the latest Android operating system, 4.4.2 KitKat, and memory starts at 16GB, which is expandable up to 128GB with the microSD slot. Oh yeah it's also the best waterproof smartphone your money can currently buy.

4) Samsung Galaxy S5

The Samsung Galaxy S5 announcement was a widespread disappointment, but that does not mean the phone is not an awesome device. A 2.5GHz quad-core processor trumps the Z2 in power, but has less RAM than its fifth placed rival at 2GB.

Battery life in the S5 is very decent with its 21 hours of talk time and 390 hours of standby time, and it too has a huge display, the 5.1" Super AMOLED screen with a pixel per inch density of 432.

The rear camera shoots at 16MP, and for 'selfies' the front-facing camera has 2MP quality. Like the Z2 is will run 4.4.2 KitKat, and it also includes a fingerprint scanner that can unlock the device or make payments with apps like PayPal.

3) Apple iPhone 5s

Despite the 5s almost being a year old and the imminent announcement of the iPhone 6, Apple's device is still one of the best bang for your buck devices on the market.

The onboard A7 chip is a very capable processor that runs Apple's latest operating system iOS 7 with ease. Battery life is the only real disappointment with this handset, Apple claim you should get 10 hours of talk time and 250 hours of standby time which isn't great when you look at its rivals.

It's not always about mega-pixels in cameras and the 5s' 8MP dual-flash rear camera is up there with the very best on the market. The 5s' standout feature is the brilliantly implemented Touch ID, integrated into the home button Touch ID allows you to unlock and make purchases just by holding you finger on it.

The 5s also sports the same 4" 326ppi display as the older iPhone 5 and the current iPhone 5c.

2) LG G3

Now this handset isn't due for release for another two-weeks so there are no reviews out yet, but its tech specs could well make it one of the best smart phones of the year.

The standout feature is going to be the screen, it will have a whopping 5.5" display with a pixel density of an incredible 534ppi, which pretty much blows any other smartphone on the market out of the water. The display will definitely set a new standard in smartphone screens.

It will run the latest Android software and have up to 900 hours standby battery life with 16 hours talk time; the LG 13MP rear camera will also be capable of capturing ultra-high definition 4K video at 30fps.

It has the exact same processor and RAM as the Galaxy S5, and can support up to 2TB of storage thanks to the onboard microSD card slot.

1) HTC One M8

Number one on our list is the appropriately named HTC One M8.

The One M8 has a beautiful full aluminium body that curves into the 5" screen for a really premium look. A 2.3GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM makes 4.4.2 KitKat run seamlessly.

HTC One M8's onboard 2,600mAh battery will last 496 hours on standby or 20 hours with talk time.

The 5" Full HD screen is a wonderful thing, it's incredible sharp and detailed with a pixel density of 441 pixels per inch.

The handset has a 5MP front-facing camera, and on the back is something special; HTC call it Dual 4 UltraPixel and it will allow you to take professional looking photos all form your smartphone.

Like all our top 5 smartphones it support ultra fast 4G connectivity and the 16GB of internal storage can be expanded up to 128GB via the microSD card slot.
