Someone in the know? Odds slashed on United signing Schweinsteiger

Bastian Schweinsteiger

The betting market can indicate an impending move, especially when odds change as drastically as they did on Friday.

It is unclear whether somebody somewhere knows something the rest of us don't, but there has been significant movement on the odds for Bayern Munich's vice-captain Bastian Schweinsteiger joining Manchester United recently.

The possibility of the German star moving to Old Trafford shifted from 5/2 earlier on Friday to 8/11 by the evening.

It comes after reports earlier in the last week that new boss Louis van Gaal had identified 29-year-old Schweinsteiger as his first choice midfield reinforcement next season.

United have long been rumoured to be hovering over Bayern's talented group of midfielders, having been heavily linked with Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller, while also showing an interest in Arjen Robben and Thiago in the past.

Signing Schweinsteiger would be a huge statement by the Old Trafford club, who are eager to signal Van Gaal's arrival with a big name player. The Dutchman managed the German while he was in charge at the Bavarian giants from 2009 to 2011. The Bayern legend may be available for a reasonable fee for a player of his class considering his age and Pep Guardiola's eagerness to put his own mark on the team.

Sky Bet's head of football trading Paul Wiggins had plenty to say on the matter:

"We’ve seen a flurry of bets on United signing Schweinsteiger this summer on the back of widespread speculation that he is Van Gaal’s primary target. It remains to be seen whether it is merely punters following the news or whether it is genuinely informed money, but we’ve been forced to cut his price significantly, having offered 5/2 on Friday morning."
