After speculation had died down recently over a move to Anfield for the Swiss there now appears to be further traction to the story.
The Goal Italia correspondent last night tweeted:
Shaqiri has been linked to Liverpool for quite a while now so these discussions must be at an advanced stage and perhaps serve as the strongest evidence thus far that Brendan Rodgers has decided to end his interest in Adam Lallana.
While Lallana was clearly the manager's first-choice target for the attacking positions it was made clear early on from numerous reports that Shaqiri was being lined up as his alternative.
Hence these latest developments reflect that Southampton's unwillingness to budge on their reported £30 million valuation of the England international means the Reds have been forced to focus their attention on Shaqiri.
And that may well prove a blessing in disguise since the player is not only cheaper, but younger and more talented too. Between £12 million and £15 million should be enough to see Liverpool acquire Shaqiri and in the process save themselves potentially £15 million.
This money could be then used towards the purchase of Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno, which itself seems to be going through protracted negotiations.
Despite the continued talks for both Moreno and Shaqiri it would not be surprising to see both deals turn into sagas especially in light of Liverpool's inability to get most deals done quickly. Certainly if the last two transfer windows are anything to go by.
