'Why did Chelsea only bid £25m for you?' - Moyes' Rooney critique revealed

Rooney V Cardiff

David Moyes' cutting dig at Wayne Rooney has been revealed by the striker himself.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is a player under pressure to perform at the World Cup this summer, after two tournaments without a goal.

Spiked by recent comments from Paul Scholes that he was past his peak, Rooney has been telling reporters about similar verbal jousting from former Manchester United boss David Moyes last summer.

The Guardian report: "'Do you think you're a top player?' Moyes asked. Rooney replied that he did. Then Moyes hit him with the killer line. 'Then why did Chelsea only offer £25 million for you?'"

The article adds that Moyes felt Rooney had lost some of his aggression, and wanted to fire him up to prove a point, by making a perfectly valid one.

Did it work? Not for David Moyes who is now currently unemployed as a manager, while there was no sensational improvement in Rooney's performances.

Despite being awarded with a bumper new contract to become United's highest paid player, Rooney's minutes per goal ratio is a regression on two seasons ago.

While his creativity is improved, last year it actually took one step back on the season earlier, although his goalscoring regularity slightly recovered from the dip in 2012/13.

It may be Paul Scholes genuinely feels Rooney has peaked two years ago, or he is simply trying to get England fired up as Moyes did to the striker last summer with his cutting comment.

It is no exaggeration to say what happens over the next few weeks in Brazil has a chance to define Rooney's career as a failure or a success, beginning with the important opener against Italy.
