According to the Daily Mail, Dejan Lovren has handed in a transfer request at Southampton amid interest from Liverpool, and Southampton may now be resigned to losing their influential defender this summer.
The Reds reportedly had a bid of £15 million rejected for the player earlier in the month, but now with the player's transfer request submitted then Liverpool may not need to raise their initial offer, but instead, offer a sweetener for the deal which is where I think Wisdom could come in.
The England under-21 captain is one of the most highly regarded young defenders in the country and after an outstanding loan spell at Derby County last season, he has only gone on to reinforced his strong reputation.
However, amid the Liverpool links various defenders this summer, the 21-year-old may be hard pushed for a place in Brendan Rodgers’ side next season and could look to a move, ideally, to another Premier League side.
Whilst still a raw player, and nowhere near as established as Lovren, Wisdom is a versatile defender with great strength, power and athleticism and could go on to become a big player for Southampton in the next few years if the correct coaching is provided.
To put emphasis on his impact at Derby County, when he signed in October of last season, the Rams were 8th in the table, four points off Reading in 6th and had already conceded 20 goals in 12 games. Subsequently, Derby, with Wisdom, went on to concede only 32 more goals in the league, which works out less than a goal a game.
Although Liverpool may not want to allow the player to leave permanently just yet, it could certainly be an option for Southampton to think about when negotiations for bid number two begin.
Liverpool, as highly as they rate Wisdom, will be under no illusions that he could be set for another year on the fringes of first-team life next season and could be a useful pawn in the bid to land one of their main targets, Dejan Lovren. And it is a deal that, I believe, could make all parties happy at the end of the day.
