Olivier Giroud makes Arsenal striker statement U-turn

Giroud Celebrates

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has made a dramatic U-turn on his belief Arsenal should sign a striker.

Arsenal are expected to sign a big name striker this summer, although the question as ever remains who?

The club do seem to have made some progress since January however, in convincing current frontman Olivier Giroud that he needs help.

Giroud told French website InfoSport+ on Wednesday: "I can tell you Arsenal will add a striker to the team.

"We need another striker. Great clubs have several good strikers, who compete with each other."

A simple enough statement and not one many would disagree with, except that he did quite vocally himself back at the end of 2013.

He told SkySports at the time: "If the coach wants me to rest, he can do it without buying a new striker.

"Lukas Podolski is having a good comeback. Theo Walcott can play as a striker. We have the quality and the quantity.

"I would rather not see a new striker come in."

The striker was full of confidence back then, and wanted to be the lead man in Arsenal's title charge.

The way the Gunners fell away so drastically through February and March, will have shown Giroud that he cannot carry the team on his back.

Giroud has been playing successfully up front with Karim Benzema in France's pre-season friendlies, and has been able to see the benefit two top strikers can have on a team, and also bring up each other's standards in terms of competition.

Whether it is Benzema who joins him or not, it's clear now that Arsene Wenger will no longer be upsetting his current top striker when he brings in a new forward this summer.
