Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher could miss United’s pre-season preparation if his broken toe requires surgery.

In Brazil, Wayne Rooney is hopeful of beating Michael Owen’s record of 40 goals for England at the World Cup this summer.

"If I feel I'm going to be successful at the World Cup I'll be looking to pass Michael Owen's record," he said the striker who needs just two goals to beat the former Liverpool striker.

Meanwhile, United coach Phil Neville is annoyed at the ‘witch-hunt’ over Wayne Rooney whilst the No.10 is on international duty with England at the World Cup.

"I just think it is a witch-hunt we don't need,” said Neville.

"Everything has been going so well with the team's preparation that people are looking for a negative now. But there isn't a negative with Wayne."

"There is a side of the English mentality to say 'let's look for a scapegoat and somebody to criticise but Wayne is our best player and that's a fact," he added.

A set of pranksters on Twitter unleashed a false alarm via a hash tag #RooneyOutFor6Weeks yesterday, suggesting the Red Devils’ favourite was injured.

In transfer news, United ‘target’ Joao Miranda has revealed he is ‘in talks’ with English clubs. The Atletico Madrid defender reportedly has a buyout clause of £24.2 million.

However, United will miss out on signing Germany star Thomas Muller who has signed a new contract with Bayern Munich. The attacker had been linked with a reunion with former coach Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford but has decided to stay at the Allianz Arena.

Meanwhile, reports suggest PSG striker Edinson Cavani will be the subject of a £56 million offer from United who are preparing to break the British transfer record to sign the Uruguayan hit man.

In other news, former United player Keith Gillespie has been sentenced to community service at Newtownards Magistrates Court for breaching a court order against an ex-partner.

Finally, United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard married Misse Beqiri today.
