Pepe Reina has been talking about his future.
The Spaniard said that an extension to his stay in Italy isn’t certain, and is only certain that he will return to Liverpool at least some point to sort out his future.
Simon Mignolet is manager Brendan Rodgers’ number one choice at Anfield, though it has been said the Reds boss is on the lookout for another goalkeeper to provide competition for the Belgian stopper, with Swansea City goalkeeper Michel Vorm being one of those linked.
But it seems that Reina’s time at Anfield has come to an end, and the wages he commands at the club is said to be a big factor.
He spent a total of eight seasons on Merseyside, and TalkSport have picked up on quotes from Spanish radio station Onda Cero, where Reina said:
"Today the only reality is that I have to return to Liverpool, [but] to return to Spain is a possibility. There are possibilities to continue in Naples - it's a city in which I have been very good and there is a project on the table."
Reading between the lines, ‘possibilities to continue in Naples’ could mean an offer from the Coppa Italia winners as they look to improve on last season’s third place in Serie A under former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez.
Last summer, Reina reportedly wanted to move back to Barcelona if an offer came in but that didn’t materialise, and now there is speculation that he could return to Spain to play for his father’s old club Atletico Madrid – with the future of Thibaut Courtois still up in the air.
Reina will be fondly remembered at Anfield as he was a fans’ favourite, but it seems his departure is now inevitable. Whether it is for another season on loan or on a permanent basis remains to be seen.
