Former team-mate tips Chelsea outcast Lukaku to better Costa at Atletico Madrid

Romelu Lukaku and Jan Vertonghen Belgium

Chelsea are paying £32 million for Diego Costa - but Everton keeper Joel Robles believes Romelu Lukaku could fill his shoes at Atletico.

It looks increasingly likely that Romelu Lukaku will not be playing his football at Chelsea FC next season. The Belgian striker made it clear last week that he wants to play week in and week out, something that would not be assured at Stamford Bridge.]

With that in mind he is seeking pastures new - with plenty of teams bound to be keen on his signature.

He spent last season on loan at Everton, almost firing the club into the Champions League, but with Chelsea now signing Diego Costa he looks set to remain an outcast in West London - hence his interest in a departure.

Interestingly enough it now appears that Atletico might be in pole position to sign the powerhouse striker.

With Costa leaving and a previous for Belgian signings at the club it would certainly be a move that made relative sense.

And now, a player who has played for both Everton and Atletico has been speaking about Lukaku and his future - in glowing terms.

Joel Robles joined Everton from Los Colchoneros last summer - after a successful loan spell under Roberto Martinez at Wigan Athletic.

And speaking to Mundo Deportivo he has made it clear just how highly he thinks of his Everton team-mate last season:

"[Lukaku] plays a lot like Diego Costa but I would say even more powerful physically. He is a real animal. A menace. He is also a player who fights a lot and has a goal just like Costa. A player who always gives as good as it gets. Never hides when the game gets ugly. He has lots of character. No doubt Atletico looking into him is a good decision."

Everton would love to keep Lukaku, but he is said to crave Champions League football next term. At the La Liga champions he would get that. He would also be their number one striker after Costa makes his move in the opposite direction. All things considered a move to the Spanish capital would be great for all parties, apart from Everton, and Robles is just one person who agrees.
