Why Arsenal should not ditch Santi Cazorla to re-sign Cesc Fabregas.

Arsenal's decision not to move to re-sign Cesc Fabregas has frustrated and perplexed a number of supporters, with the Spaniard seemingly set for Chelsea.

One of the reasons put forward for Arsene Wenger's reluctance to do a deal, is the stars already at his disposal, Santi Cazorla suggested as prominent in those thoughts.

International teammates, the prospect of them playing together would remain an enticing one, but with Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey available too, plus Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere, Arsenal are not short of options in midfield.

The news Cazorla has emerged as a potential transfer target for Atletico Madrid certainly stirred up some debate among fans; could this provide a platform for them to re-enter the Fabregas bidding?

In likelihood, Arsenal will be keeping Cazorla and continue their stance on Fabregas. And it's quite probably the right decision.

Not sure? Take a look at the statistics from 2013/14 below, where Cazorla out-performed Fabregas in five key areas.

TeamKey Passes/ appsTotal Pass / appsTotal Scoring Att / appsWon Contest / appsTotal Tackles / apps
Santi Cazorla Arsenal 2.16 62.48 2.35 1.58 1.50
Cesc Fabregas Barcelona 1.60 60.70 1.40 0.70 1.30

Fabregas landed up with eight La Liga goals and 13 assists to Cazorla's four Premier League goals and eight assists, but given Cesc has the privilege of playing alongside Lionel Messi, and Cazorla, Giroud, then you might just wonder how ultimately productive Cazorla would be at Barcelona.

Arsenal know Cesc could produce for them, but is he a guaranteed improvement all-round over Cazorla? The statistics appear to back up Arsene Wenger's stance that one Spanish international midfielder is enough for this Arsenal side.
