The decision by David Moyes to axe the Dutchman and other key Ferguson staff is said to be one of the reasons the Scot's time at the club was such a difficult one. It arguably made too big a break between the Ferguson years, which wasn't just what the players were used to, but also inevitably the departure of a group of coaches that were among the best in the world when working with the United squad.
Meulensteen was so highly thought of that he managed to land a number of management jobs following his departure, including an ill-fated spell at Fulham.
However, the former United assistant still clearly has a soft spot for the Old Trafford club, and was speaking to Sky Sports about what kind of players they should be aiming for in order to get back to where he feels they belong.
In his mind, there is plenty of work to be done in the transfer market. Interestingly Meulentseen stated his opinion that Louis van Gaal would inevitably be a draw for players, and that young talented players like Luke Shaw are exactly who the Reds should be looking at.
"It is defiantly of vital importance that United will be able to bring the squad up to the quality to win the Premier League and get into the Champions League," said the Dutchman.
"With Louis van Gaal's pedigree you would think that players would be tempted to come and play for Manchester United.
"The centre back scenario and midfield area definitely needs to be addressed.
"Luke Shaw is the kind of young talented players that has lots of potential for future years to come, so if United can strike a deal for Luke Shaw I think it's a good one."
Southampton youngster has been linked with a near £30 million move to Manchester for some time now, and is currently on England duty in Brazil. Who United target to fill those other defensive and midfield positions, only Louis van Gaal and Ed Woodward know, but it may not be great news for those still at the club.
