Many of Everton's squad are currently away on international duty as the World Cup gets underway, and Toffees skipper Phil Jagielka will be starting at centre back for England against Italy on Saturday night. The Azzurri dumped Roy Hodgson's side out of Euro 2012, but Jagielka says that the Three Lions have grown as a team since being beaten on penalties.
"I feel like as a squad we have got stronger since then," said Jagielka. "There are only three games in the group and you need at least one win. It’s important to get off to a good start. Hopefully after the Italy game we will be happy and have teed ourselves up nicely."
Meanwhile, striker Romelu Lukaku has returned to Chelsea after the expiration of his loan deal at Everton, and has been suggested as a repacement for Chelsea-bound Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa. Toffees goalkeeper Joel, who played for the La Liga side, says the Belgian would be a good replacement for the Spanish international.
"He is a real animal, a beast. He is also a player who fights a lot and has a goal in him, like Costa," said Joel. Lukaku is a player who always faces up. He never hides if a game gets ugly, and has a lot of character. No doubt, he would be a good signing for Atletico.
"He is the typical type of player for Diego Simeone and would convince him from day one," he added. "He would suit Atletico's game smoothly, he is very fast and I think he would do well."
Whilst Lukaku probably won't be returning to Goodison Park, manager Roberto Martinez is working hard behind the scenes to strengthen his squad ahead of their Europa League campaign. Two new names to be linked with moves to Merseyside are Dutch international duo Stefan de Vrij and Jeremain Lens. Feyenoord defender de Vrij looks set to start at the World Cup, whilst Dynamo Kiev winger Lens would likely be a replacement for Gerard Deulofeu.
