Today we cast our eye back to what was happening in the world of football exactly 12 months ago. What were the main stories? The twists, turns and scoops?
Here are just some of the things going on back on June 9 last year…
Arsenal ready to smash their transfer record…three times!
Arsenal were getting ready to beat their transfer record with bids for up to three players according to the Mail on Sunday. Those men were Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan, Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender and Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain.
A few months later Arsenal would smash that record, but it was to be Higuain’s then-Real teammate Mesut Ozil who ultimately made the move…and the headlines.
Mourinho wants £90m of striking talent
Sitting comfortably in the Chelsea hot-seat once more, Jose Mourinho was linked with a £90million swoop for strike duo Edinson Cavani and Hulk.
The Express reported that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was happy with the double-deal, with the Blues set to offer around £53million for Cavani and £40million for Hulk. The double move was also said to mark the end of Fernando Torres’ time at Stamford Bridge.
But 12 months later, the Spaniard is still there and Chelsea have turned their attention to his international teammate Diego Costa.
Spurs ‘have a fight on their hands’ for Bernard
Tottenham Hotspur were linked with a move for Brazilian midfielder Bernard, but it would not be easy to get him according to a report in the Sunday Mirror.
Borussia Dortmund were also tipped to make a move for the diminutive play-maker, who was said to be part of Spurs’ expensive overhaul.
In the end, the player moved to Shakhtar Donetsk and Tottenham signed plenty of others instead.
