North East latest: Newcastle want £100,000-a-week forward; Sunderland in for defender

We bring you the latest news involving Newcastle United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

We bring you news of all the biggest stories to break involving clubs in the North-East over the last 24 hours.

1) AC Milan offer Davide Santon swap

According to reports in the Italian media, AC Milan are prepared to offer Newcastle United the pair of M’Baye Niang and Kevin Constant to convince them to allow Davide Santon to leave St James’ Park.

Santon has recently said that he is happy to stay at Newcastle, amid interest from Roma, but the potential to have two of Milan’s hottest properties could tempt the Toon Army to sell.

2) Newcastle on the verge of signing Bafetimbi Gomis

Newcastle United are closing in on signing striker Bafetimbi Gomis, according to the Mail.

The powerful front-man’s contract at Lyon expired at the end of last season and it is thought that he is the man Alan Pardew has identified to solve his striking problem this summer.

The 28-year-old was linked with Galatasaray previously, but his wage demands – of £100,000 a week – were reportedly the stumbling block in his move to Turkey, allowing Newcastle to swoop.

3) Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa subject of Marseille interest

Newcastle defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa could be set to return to Ligue 1 only a season after leaving the division.

The Daily Mail reports that Marseille are lining up a bid for the powerful centre-back who joined Newcastle from Montpellier for £7.5 million last summer.

It is not thought that Newcastle will be able to recoup the entirety of the money they spent for the 25-year-old, but a deal could still be done.

4) Sunderland looking to sign Curtis Davies

Curtis Davies is of interest to Sunderland, according to East Grinstead Courier.

The powerful centre-back was impressive at the heart of Hull’s defence as they maintained their Premier League status in their first season back in the top flight and is on Gus Poyet’s wish-list as he looks to strengthen his squad.

If Sunderland are to sign the defender they will have to compete with Newcastle and Everton, though, with both clubs also considering tabling offers for the defender.

5) Middlesbrough deny Tuncay interest

Middlesbrough have been linked with making a move to bring Tuncay back to the club in the local press, but the club have denied that they are interested in the striker.

The club are known to be on the look-out for an attacker, after missing out on Lewis Grabban already this summer, but Tuncay is not one of Aitor Karanka’s targets.
