Midlands latest: WBA prepare bid for Ligue 1 star; Wolves on verge of Maguire signing

We bring you news from Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Stoke City

We bring you news of all the biggest stories to break involving clubs in the Midlands over the last 24 hours.

1) Shay Given backs Jack Grealish to be a star for club and country

Aston Villa coach Shay Given believes that Jack Grealish can be a star for his club and for the Republic of Ireland.

Grealish spent most of last season out on loan at Notts County and was one of the best players in League One.

Indeed, he did enough to impress the Villa heirachy and was handed his debut in the club’s penultimate Premier League game against Manchester City.

As a result, there is now an expectation on Grealish to make a big impact next season and Given has backed him to be a star of the future, if there isn’t too much pressure put on him.

“They [Ireland] have a real talent in Jack Grealish,” he said to the Birmingham Mail.

“He was in our last couple of squads for the end of the season at Villa and he never looked out of place.

“But he is still very young and you wouldn’t want to be pinning your hopes for the European Championships on a teenager. He has a big future and hopefully he will get more games at Villa next season.”

2) Ryan Shawcross expects more Stoke additions

With Steve Sidwell becoming Stoke City's third season already this summer today, Mark Hughes has been busy this transfer window, but Ryan Shawcross does not believe that the additions will stop there.

The Potters have already signed Mame Biram Diouf and Phil Bardsley on free-transfers and Shawcross has revealed he expects the club to do further business in the near future.

"They are good signings all round," Shawcross told The Sentinel. "They are free signings, so no gambles there, and they are both very good players with a good history.

"They will hopefully add to our squad and improve us, and I'm sure we will add a few more."

3) Jordan Ayew could move to West Brom

West Bromwich Albion’s long-term target, Jordan Ayew, could be heading to the Hawthorns this summer.

Ayew has been made available for transfer by his current club, Marseille, according to the Express and Star and the Baggies are set to make a bid for the 22-year-old.

The Ghanaian could also be available at a cut-price as his contract expires next year.

4) Birmingham City sign Stephen Gleeson

Birmingham City have announced the signing of central-midfield star Stephen Gleeson today.

Gleeson had been at MK Dons, but opted not to renew his contract at the club, and has found his decision justified – with a move to the Championship coming to fruition.

The Republic of Ireland international has signed a two year deal at St. Andrews and will add creativity and composure in the central-midfield area for the club.

5) Wolves are on the verge of signing Harry Maguire

According to the Shropshire Star a deal between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sheffield United for Harry Maguire could be imminent.

Kenny Jackett is thought to have identified Maguire as one of his top targets this summer as he looks to strengthen his side for Championship football and has bid £2 million for the centre-back.

That was considered a final offer by Wolves, but they now appear confident they will be able to secure the signing of the talented youngster after a protracted transfer saga.
