Newcastle United today completed the signing of Jack Colback who joined from rivals Sunderland on a free transfer. The 24-year-old versatile player joins the club he supported as a young boy and has signed a five-year-deal with the club.
He becomes Newcastle's first permanent signing made by new managing director Lee Charnley, and also the first player to move between The Magpies and The Mackems since Lee Clark moved to the Stadium of Light in 1997.
Colback certainly has to win over the majority of Newcastle fans especially after shushing the crowd following his goal in the 3-0 derby win for Sunderland over Newcastle in February. The first Tyne-Wear derby of the new season will be a huge occasion for Colback and he will have to show exactly where his loyalty lies. Lee Cattermole will most probably be on the lookout to make an impact on the midfielder.
He will need to show grit, determination, and passion to win over the Geordie faithful as many are already hugely against this signing, however some have seen it just from a footballing perspective and appreciate his talents:
You know what, I'm actually happy we've signed Colback, decent backup to Anita and Tiote, looking forward to seeing him in action. #NUFC— Ädåm. (@Adam_NUFC98) June 9, 2014
Imagine how awkward derby day is gonna be for Jack Colback. He'll be deafened by the booing.— PAB (@paigerowellCCx) June 9, 2014
If any Newcastle fans are under the impression Colback is/was our best player, they are sadly mistaken.— Matthew Baker (@FezzaSAFC) June 9, 2014
Wow I'm surprised at Jack Colback, though he was sunderland through and through— Matty Slater (@mattyslater_) June 9, 2014
