Arsenal's first signing: Seven possibilities

Arsenal Emirates 2

Arsenal are still to clinch their first signing of the summer. Who will it be?

Arsenal left their major transfer business last season until deadline day, and it would be a surprise if they decided to shop at the last minute once again.

Arsene Wenger said at the beginning of the month that he expects June and July to be the busy times for transfers for the Gunners, but 10 days into that period the Gunners are yet to clinch their first deal.

Rumours abound aplenty, but it's not clear just who the first signing through the doors will be. Here is a run down of seven strong possibilities:

Serge Aurier

The Ivory Coast right-back has been widely tipped as Bacary Sagna's successor, and is keen himself on a switch to Arsenal. Currently playing for Toulouse in Ligue 1, the 21-year-old scored six times and provided seven assists last season.

Mario Mandzukic

Bayern Munich star Mario Mandzukic is almost certain to depart the Bundesliga champions after falling out with manager Pep Guardiola. Robert Lewandowski has already been signed to replace him and the Croatian international is one of the few top strikers available on the transfer market. Mandzukic netted 26 goals last season.

Carlos Vela

Arsenal have been linked heavily with re-signing Carlos Vela from Real Sociedad, thanks to their buy-back option which exists in his contract. Vela scored 20 goals for the La Liga side last season, who want to buy the clause out of his contract to keep him.

Alvaro Morata

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti indicated yesterday that Alvaro Morata would be allowed to leave, but competition for the Spanish under-21 star is strong. Juventus, Wolfsburg and Manchester United have all been linked over the past week, with Real's insistence on a buy-back option complicating any deal.

Antoine Griezmann

French star Antoine Griezmann is one star whose price is set to rocket after the World Cup. The Sociedad winger is replacing the injured Franck Ribery for Les Bleus and has been showing his class in warm-up games. Arsene Wenger has been credited with interest in the left-sided attacker, and Arsenal's Vela clause could provide them with an edge to sign Griezmann over their competitors if they agree to cancel it.

Mario Balotelli

Italian maverick Mario Balotelli is rumoured to be willing to move from Milan, who do not have Champions League football on offer next season. Wenger once raved about the player but managing the difficuly Balotelli may be a decision he passes on. The player's sponsorship with Puma, Arsenal's new kit manufacturers add an extra slice of intrigue.

Cesc Fabregas

That hasn't proved decisive with Fabregas however, Arsenal's former prodigy who is available from Barcelona. Also sponsored by Puma, the midfielder is currently tipped to sign with rivals Chelsea. Arsenal hold a first option clause and emotional ties with the player, and the possibility of them changing their minds and hijacking a Mourinho coup has to be tempting.
