Arsenal hero explains why Wenger will let Cesc Fabregas sign for Chelsea

Cesc Fabregas Barcelona

Martin Keown has been explaining why Arsenal will pass on Cesc Fabregas, leaving him free to sign for Chelsea instead.

If Arsenal signed Cesc Fabregas back from Barcelona this summer, no possible deal could top it with Gunners fans in terms of popularity.

Which makes the thought so odd that the Spaniard appears so close to a transfer to rivals Chelsea, with Arsenal side-stepping the chase.

Former Gunners hero Martin Keown has been explaining Arsene Wenger's apparent stance, arguing that the Spaniard simply no longer fits in with the current squad.

Keown told "I'm not surprised. After Fabregas left, Arsene had to invest time in someone else and he doesn't want to block their path if Fabregas comes back.

"Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is someone who can play in that central midfield position as well as Jack Wilshere of course.

"Wenger probably feels he's more than catered for in that attacking midfield area - it's a defensive midfielder that's going to be more purposeful in that Arsenal squad now."

With Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky and Mesut Ozil available, the prudent Wenger is clearly thinking practically and from an economic perspective, not wanting to spend £30 million where he feels it is not necessary.

Former defender Keown added: "People move on, people make their decisions and if he ends up playing for one of Arsenal's rivals that's football, it's just the way it is."
