Last summer, Chelsea were strongly linked with Sporting Lisbon starlet Bruma and yet, despite speculation he would move to Stamford Bridge, he ultimately moved to Turkish side Galatasaray.
After some promising performances, the Portuguese winger was struck down with a knee ligament injury that ended both his season and any hope he had of travelling to the World Cup this summer.
The latest report claims Chelsea are once again interested in a player previously dubbed “the next Cristiano Ronaldo”, but that this time they have company.
Everton, Stoke City, Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United are also reportedly interested in a player whose future generated plenty of column inches in Portugal prior to his somewhat surprising move to Turkey.
To give you some idea of the teenager’s talent, he set up three goals in just seven matches prior to his injury, having only just moved to a new club.
The right winger is supremely gifted but Galatasaray will not want to lose him having rarely been able to use him to date. And considering the number of young start who cannot get into Chelsea’s first team at the moment, a move for Bruma makes little sense, although the same cannot be said in regard to the other English clubs reportedly interested.
A loan move may be the best option at this stage, as the Turkish side see if the player is fully recovered from his serious injury. And if that is the case, few clubs have worked that market more intelligently than Everton in recent times.
The only question is whether Roberto Martinez really is interested in a player who could have a similar impact to previous loanee Gerard Deulofeu.
