Manchester United are interested in bringing Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba to Old Trafford according to reports in Spain.
Newspaper AS has picked up on claims from Fichajes.net that Louis van Gaal has set his sights on the Spanish international as he considers the players who can become the long-term replacement for Patrice Evra.
The French international recently agreed a one-year contract extension at United. But his time at the club is slowly coming to an end, and van Gaal will know he needs a talented young replacement when the time comes.
Reports have previously suggested United would complete a £30million move for Southampton’s Luke Shaw. But those stories have died down somewhat since David Moyes’ departure and Evra’s extension.
In truth it is even less likely United could sign Alba than Shaw, despite the fact that the former spent the majority of last season on the side-lines.
That was due to a series of injuries and the 25-year-old usually featured when fit, and with a contract until the summer of 2017, the chance of van Gaal signing him is slim.
The report indicates just that, claiming Alba is all but untouchable. But it claims United will try until the very last moment to sign a player who had been linked with the club during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign, only to instead opt for the Nou Camp.
And as for Shaw, well it could be that this is simply a canny piece of speculation designed to show the England international he is not the only option United are considering.
Alternatively, it could really be that United have moved on from potentially signing the best young full-back England has produced for many years.
