Two years after losing Paul Pogba to Juventus on a free transfer, Manchester United have been linked with a monster bid to bring him back.
In a report published by the Guardian, the Serie A champions have quoted United with a £60million fee to bring him back to Old Trafford.
The paper claim that the French international is open to the idea of moving on from Turin, but at such a price, Man United boss Louis Van Gaal would be blowing a hefty proportion of his summer transfer kitty.
21-year-old Paul Pogba is certainly the type of midfield enforcer the Red Devils so desperately crave, but here are five cheaper alternatives who could also fill the same role:
The 22-year-old Sporting Lisbon midfielder has caught the attention of Europe’s biggest clubs following a terrific season in Portugal.
The Angolan-born midfielder offers strength, aggression and a terrific range of passing, with his recent performance for the Portuguese national team against Greece demonstrating his fine ability.
With a release clause at £37million, whilst expensive, he still represents a cheaper alternative to Paul Pogba.
The former Arsenal star has been out of the picture at Barcelona since arriving in 2012, and he has reportedly been made available for transfer this summer.
Alex Song made just 12 La Liga starts last season, and for a midfielder with his ability, that simply isn’t enough.
Linked with a return to the Premier League, he would be the perfect fit for Manchester United and with a reported asking price of £15million, an absolute steal too.
Manchester United have been heavily linked with the Dutch international over the past few days, with boss Louis Van Gaal reportedly a big fan.
The Guardian claimed that United have already launched a £30million bid for the midfielder, though due to his current injury, any deal wouldn’t be finalised until the January transfer window.
Italian side Roma reportedly aren’t interested in selling, but if Van Gaal comes calling, the box-to-box midfielder may find Old Trafford hard to resist.
Reported by the Daily Star on Friday, Manchester United have allegedly named the Bayern Munich man their number one target this summer.
Reports have indicated that the two clubs have been in contact over the 29-year-old, though for Bastian Schweinsteiger to leave the club after spending his entire career there could be deemed fanciful.
Rated at €40million by transfermarkt.com, he would be cheaper than Paul Pobga, but due to his age, perhaps not such a good investment.
Perhaps not the most renowned name on the list, Morgan Schneiderlin nonetheless is the perfect match for Man United.
The 24-year-old French midfielder was a rock for Southampton last season, making 113 tackles, 68 interceptions and maintaining an 89.3% pass success rate.
Linked with an exit from the South Coast following Mauricio Pochettino’s move to Tottenham Hotspur, the £15million-rated star is certainly a fine cheap alternative to Pogba and one who already has good experience at Premier League level.
