On this day: United in 'huge' Fabregas attempt; Alonso targeted

On the 8th June 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 8th June 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 8th June 2013…

Cheque for Cesc

Manchester United were reportedly planning a 'huge bid' for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas. David Moyes was looking to make a big splash in the transfer market - to announce himself as the new United manager.

But he never made the move from Barca and United were criticised for not sealing this, among many other deals.

A year later and the former Arsenal captain looks set to join Chelsea in the coming days.

Fernando Suarez

Fernando Torres said he understood Luis Suarez's desire to leave the club. The Uruguayan had been linked with a move away for most of the summer and had publicly declared an intent to leave.

Torres once left Liverpool for Chelsea and said of Suarez's predicament:

"I never had a problem with the media, the media had a problem with me. That affects your family, your friends, it's not easy. I know Luis, he is strong enough to play football despite all the rumours and all the talk but it's not easy."

Xabi Xabi Xabi

Meanwhile Chelsea were being linked with a former Anfield favourite to bulk out their midfield.

Jose Mourinho had worked with Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid and was said to be ready to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

It was a rumour that abounded for several weeks, until the Spanish international signed a new deal with Los Merengues.
