Marseille star Andre Ayew linked with Liverpool move – Three questions

Liverpool have been linked with Marseille's Andre Ayew, but what questions should Reds fans be asking about the mooted deal?

Liverpool have joined the race for Marseille winger Andre Ayew according to the Express.

The 24-year-old has a contract until the summer of 2015, but he has been linked with a move away for some time, with Manchester United and Newcastle United among the other clubs linked with him.

But Liverpool fans will want the answers to a few questions before they know whether to get excited or not. So here goes:

Is he a better option than the other left wingers linked with Liverpool?

Liverpool have been linked with a whole host of left wingers in recent months, including Yevhen Konoplyanka, Antoine Griezmann and Nicolas Gaitain to name a few. Ayew scored eight goals for Marseille last season and provided four assists, and straight away those figures look poor in comparison with Griezmann, who scored 20 and set up five in his last season at Real Sociedad.

In fact, Ayew’s goal-scoring return is less than not only Griezmann, but also Konoplyanka, who netted 13 goals last season for Dnipro and set up a further nine. Gaitain scored one less goal than Ayew, but set up six more.

So in short, there are better options out there in terms of goals scored and created. But they may be out of Liverpool's reach.

Would he be a success in the Premier League?

Of course that is impossible to answer with certainty but the fact that Ayew has spent his entire career in France suggests it will take some acclimatising. He has been a Marseille player for all that time, although he did enjoy loan spells at Lorient and Arles-Avignon.

He could hit the ground running but more likely it will take time for him to show what he is capable of.  Then again, an outstanding World Cup campaign could prove he is worth the gamble, but in a group containing Portugal, USA and Germany, he will have to be at his best to make an impact.

Would his transfer fee be money well spent on Liverpool’s part?

Ayew will reportedly be available for a fee in the region of £10million and in truth that is probably a fair reflection of his value in the current market. That said, there is better value to be found with the likes of Griezmann and Konoplyanka likely to move on this summer.

There will also be some hidden gems Rodgers is likely to have his eye on and for £10million the Reds may feel they would be better suited looking elsewhere. Especially when you consider that Ayew has provided just 19 assists in his entire 177-game Marseille career.
