The World Cup is not only football's biggest tournament, but it also serves as a shop window for players to impress onlooking clubs.
Manchester United's shocking season is finally over, and their fans can look forward to the summer with excitement. Manager David Moyes was sacked in April after a dismal ten month stint in charge at Old Trafford, and the announcement that Louis van Gaal will be the new manager has supporters looking forward with optimism.
Van Gaal must first complete his duties with the Dutch national team at this summer's World Cup, where he will get to see some of the finest talent around first hand. Some of those players on show could be potential targets for the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona coach, so here are five players in Group G who could be on United's radar.
Mats Hummels, Germany
After United let Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand leave Old Trafford this summer, the Red Devils are in desperate need of centre halves. Van Gaal's primary target is reportedly Borussia Dortmund star Hummels, who has starred for the Bundesliga side in recent years. The 25-year-old is widely considered as one of the top centre halves in Europe, and would certainly replace the likes of Vidic and Ferdinand.
Toni Kroos, Germany
Adding a central midfielder has to be a priority for United too, and one of the names most strongly linked with the club if Bayern Munich's Kroos. The 24-year-old is reportedly unhappy at the Allianz Arena as the club won't offer him a new and improved contract, leading to speculation of a £25m move from United as they look to finally sign Paul Scholes' long-term replacement.
Thomas Muller, Germany
Kroos isn't the only Bayern star linked with an exit to Old Trafford, as forward Muller has also been suggested as a potential target for van Gaal. Muller, 24, has been a consistent performer for both club and country over the past few years, and with United needing an injection of quality both out wide and up front, Muller could be the man to boost United's attacking prowess.
Fabio Coentrao, Portugal
Close to a move to United in September and again in January, Coentrao has been long suggested as a target for the Red Devils as long-serving Patrice Evra heads towards the end of his career. The 26-year-old Portuguese international is in talks with the Spanish giants over a new contract, but given that he's behind Marcelo in the United pecking order, the promise of first team football at Old Trafford could put him back in the frame.
William Carvalho, Portugal
Alongside Kroos, Sporting Lisbon star Carvalho has been strongly tipped to be a summer signing for the Red Devils after a superb season in Portugal. The 22-year-old is strong and physical in the middle of the park, and after a season where United struggled in midfield, the Angolan-born star would be just what United need. Valued at around £37m, Carvalho would be pricey - but displays this season suggest that he's well worth it.
