The Borussia Dortmund midfielder suffered ankle ligament damage last night in the friendly game between Germany and Armenia, which leaves Jorgi Low without one of his most important midfielders.
However, he has one of the best possible replacements ready to step forward in the form of Mesut Ozil, who can create a lot of momentum heading into next season.
Ozil was slammed in Germany for his performance in the recent friendly against Cameroon.
That tied in with his inconsistent form over the second half of the season with Arsenal but he was publicly backed by Low, who said the midfielder would produce his best for his country when they needed it.
He was right on the money with regards to his performance last night, which will give Arsenal’s midfield maestro confidence ahead of much tougher games.
Ozil is likely to step into the heart of Germany’s midfield for their first World Cup group game against Portugal and if he can hit the ground running, he can create a number of benefits for Arsenal.
Germany are one of the favourites to win the tournament in Brazil and that won’t change despite Reus’ injury.
Should the Germans be successful, it’s likely that Ozil will be at the heart of that success, which will give him tremendous self confidence when he heads back to North London.
Tie that in with the idea that Arsene Wenger is likely to sign players, who will help to get the best out of Ozil next season and he could repeat the start of last season where he was close to unplayable.
The magnifying glass is out and it will be pointed firmly in Ozil’s direction as the likes of Mario Gotze and Julian Draxler snap around his heels in the Germany squad.
Don’t be surprised if he controls Germany’s midfield throughout the tournament and repeats the kind of performance he came up with against the Armenians last night.
