German tabloid Bild has reported that FC Mainz will spend part of their pre-season schedule in England, which is significant news for Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur over one of the German side’s younger players.
Mainz will spend one week training at the England national team’s base at St George’s Park and Johannes Geis may be getting plenty of attention from representatives of the North London rivals.
Both Arsenal and Tottenham have been linked with the 20-year-old holding player in the recent past, which could spark a fight to try and talk to the player directly should he be part of the touring part which comes to England from July 20 to July 26.
Despite the fact he’s still just a young man, he was one of Mainz’ most consistent players last season with 33 appearances in the Bundesliga producing a single goal and seven assists, which isn’t a bad ratio for a holding midfielder.
While Geis would surely be tempted to talk to both London clubs while in England, it’s only natural that he’d be wary of a move away from his current employers where he’s guaranteed first team football.
Arsenal’s advantage is that they have a strong core group of German players, which will help any younger German to bed into the infrastructure of the team.
Tottenham’s obvious advantage is their manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has a very recent history of developing young players rapidly and he’s not afraid to throw them into his first team.
Both clubs are under pressure to make signings this summer and while Geis doesn’t represent the high profile player that fans of both clubs would be hoping far, he looks to be a safe and solid investment.
There’s also the chance that other Premier League teams could send scouts to watch him while Mainz are in England but if the reports suggesting Arsenal and Tottenham’s interest is accurate, they will be more effectively primed to go about trying to sign him.
