With several years experience playing in both Germany and Austria, the former Norwegian forward has close ties to the Bundesliga, and currently works for Sky Germany as part of their football coverage.
Unsurprisingly then, he is likely to have an educated opinion on those that play their football in Germany.
However, worryingly for Liverpool fans, not only has Fjortoft been one of the first to speak up about the move, he has also been one of the first to criticise it.
When questioned on Twitter as to what Can will bring to Anfield, the former Swindon Town forward seemed unequivocal in his doubting of the 20-year-old.
And again Fjortoft was damning of Liverpool's new signing, responding to Sky Sports News' question as to whether Can is a good signing for the Reds: "No he's not, I don't think he's a good signing, I think he's an average player in Germany.
"But Brendan Rodgers has shown before that he is a much, much better manager than Jan Age Fjortoft, so we'll have to trust him in that department.
"I can't see that he'll improve Liverpool football club."
Bayern have got it wrong in the past with young players, notably letting Mats Hummels join Borussia Dortmund only for the big defender to emerge as the country's leading centre back.
Liverpool fans will likely be hoping that Rodgers has spotted a talent in Can that Fjortoft and the Bayern staff missed out on, much like they did with the Borussia man.
